The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is Saturday, September 30th.

We hope you’ll take the time to participate in an activity, or simply contemplate the ways you can contribute to reconciliation in your community. There are many ways to learn, honour and celebrate Indigenous culture and history in Winnipeg this year. Below is a selection of events you might be interested in. A Ceremony for Love, Learning, Healing and Friendship | St.Amant
September 27th

A Sacred Fire will be lit as the group holds space in their hearts for all children who were lost, those who died and all families and communities who were and continue to be impacted by the devastating legacy of Canada’s residential school system. The group will share stories to honor the past and the present day and as well as gifts of art and song to nurture courage for our path forward.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | St. Boniface Hospital
September 26th through 29th

The hospital is hosting several activities throughout the week including selling orange t-shirts on September 26th and 27th, a drumming and flag-raising ceremony on the 28th, and a presentation from the Clan Mothers Healing Village on the 29th as part of Indigenous Health’s Grand Rounds.

A Discussion on the Doctrine of Discovery | Réseau Compassion Network
September 27th

Join us as we explore the doctrine of discovery, and the impact it has had on Indigenous people on Turtle Island. This session will be led by Christine Vanagas, Director of Indigenous Relations, Siloam Mission.

Day of Caring and Orange Shirt Day | Marymound
September 29th

This event, hosted on the grounds of Marymound, will include games, info booths, snacks, a market and silent auction.

Lunch and Learns | National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation
September 25th – 29th

Led by Survivors and other subject matter experts, these online sessions will feature discussions around the history of the residential school experience, intergenerational impacts, Indigenous rights, taking action towards Reconciliation, and so much more!

Orange Shirt Days | Manitoba Museum
September 30th – October 2nd

Admission to the museum is free for Orange Shirt Days and programming includes a self-guided tour that highlights the exhibits and videos relevant to the history of Indian Residential Schools and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, the Mackay Residential School Gathering Inc. pop-up art exhibit, daily performances by Beautiful Cloud Company Powwow Dancers, as well as special programming in the Planetarium and Auditorium.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | St. Boniface Museum
September 30th

Admission to the museum is free, and programming includes the chance to visit with memère and pepère Métis, as well as a viewing of two movies, Memère Métisse and ShapeShifters. The museum itself features artefacts and history of St. Boniface, including many items belonging to Louis Riel and his compatriots, the founders of Manitoba.

2nd Annual Orange Shirt Day Pow Wow and Survivors Walk | Wa-Say Healing Centre
September 30th

The Survivors Walk begins at 11am at the Oodena Circle at the Forks and heads to the RBC Convention Centre. The grand entry of the Pow Wow begins at 1pm, and the event aims to recognizes the tragic legacy of residential schools, the missing children, the families left behind and honors the survivors.

Every Child Matters Memorial Community Gathering | Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata
September 30th

This unveiling of the Every Child Matters Memorial Art Project will form the basis of this gathering. The event will include teachings by a community Elder, youth presenters, the presentation of the memorial project, cultural activities, and will conclude with burning of tobacco ties and a feast.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | Children’s Museum
September 30th

The museum is offering free general admission for a journey of education and reflection with a Métis Paper Vest workshop facilitated by the Louis Riel Institute and programming provided by Elder Barb Nepinak. A teepee will be on display for special story times at 12:00PM and 2:00PM and bannock will be served while supplies last.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | WAG-Qaumajuq
September 30th

Join the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Quamajuq on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as they welcome the community to take part in tours, workshops, and talks that centre the experiences and history of Indigenous children forced to attend Indian Residential Schools.
