Understanding Complex Poverty
This is an invitation to join us in learning about the complex poverty model with Dr. Jim Silver. We know that many factors impact our lives and can make it extremely difficult to find a way out of poverty. Dr. Silver will help us understand the intersectionality of social, economic and cultural influences that can either help or hinder individuals. He will also share ways that people in Manitoba have begun to introduce meaningful and sustainable solutions.
About Dr. Jim Silver:
Jim has published extensively on inner-city and poverty-related issues and is Professor Emeritus – Urban and Inner-City Studies at the University of Winnipeg.
Jim has been very active in the redevelopment of the old Merchants Hotel on Selkirk Avenue into Merchants Corner, which will have 30 units of subsidized housing for students with families, and where Urban & Inner-City Studies will be located, sharing space with the North End high school support program, CEDA/Pathways to Education. Jim was also very active, for 6 or 7 years, in the redevelopment of Lord Selkirk Park and has been actively involved in a number of other community initiatives in Winnipeg’s inner city.
