The Doctrine of Discovery: A Discussion

Discussion will focus on the effects of the Doctrine of Discovery on the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island and its impact on Truth and Reconciliation. The presentation will also examine how Anishinaabe teachings and worldview offer a framework for navigating the path forward.

Christine Vanagas (Bear Clan) is Anishinaabe from Long Plain First Nation. Christine is the Director of Indigenous Relations and Healing at Siloam Mission. Christine is a granddaughter, daughter and niece of residential school Survivors. Previous to this role, she was the Governance Secretary at the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation from 2018 – 2022 where she had the privilege of working closely with residential school Survivors and Indigenous knowledge keepers across Canada. She holds closely the teachings from the Indigenous Elders she was blessed to sit with and learn from, as well as her Christian faith. Both influence the writings in her blog: www.landbackministries.com.
