Marymound has received $55,000 in funding from the Government of Manitoba to create a safer space for intoxicated youth who are detained under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act (IPDA).
Marymound’s Executive Director, Nancy Parker, says, ““Marymound is deeply appreciative of the collaborative work with the Government of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Police Service that will allow us to make these changes to support the safety of youth and staff. We want to ensure our youth are safe and well-cared for with the dignity they deserve.”
The one-time funding for upgrades will allow each room to be retrofitted with a toilet and sink, removing the need for youth to be moved between the detention room and bathroom by staff. It will also allow for an appropriate and safe sleeping surface and privacy masking for the washroom area.
