We often speak about the legacy of the nuns when we discuss how we can continue to make an impact in Manitoba. When it comes to meeting unmet needs, we are looking for bold and innovative solutions to issues that are important to the community that many are trying to figure out. The sisters always did just that: saw the need and got to work.
We’re proud of the ways that legacy lives on in 2021. For instance, this e-newsletter features an article about Sara Riel Inc. who has begun tracking outcomes in a new way. When their consultants started to deep dive into the results, they said, “We just don’t see scores like this in social services. You know that, right?” Their innovative approach to supporting those with mental health issues is making a real difference to participants and now they are building up the data to prove it. They’re truly a model for compassionate care in that sector of services.
We were also pleased to see the Clan Mothers launch the clearing of their land and conduct their first ceremonies on the future site of their Healing Village. Designed as a place where Indigenous women will be able to heal from their trauma, this land-based healing will have a focus on ceremony and social enterprise opportunities and will give the women all the time they need to heal. Réseau Compassion Network is playing a small role in this innovative project and is in the process of gifting the 50-hectare site where it will be located. You can read more about their launch here.
Lastly, we’re building relationships with a few non-profit and private organizations that are looking to bring some innovative housing solutions to downtown Winnipeg. A private property in the area houses 150 people who are struggling to make ends meet, even with very low rental rates. The reality is that the building that they call home is in desperate need of repair and redevelopment, and the people who live in these apartments have a right to better living environments. The challenge…how to do this in a way that keeps the rents at the affordable rates they are at now, and how do we connect appropriate services that match the needs of the people who live there? What can we do when we work together? We will see where this journey takes us. To begin, Réseau Compassion Network has funded a needs assessment so our partners can learn more about the people who live in these apartments and to help inform the design of a solution – nothing about us without us! It’s early days, but we’re excited to be a part of something that could truly make an impact for those who need it most.
We believe our actions are consistent with what the Sisters would have done.
Before we sign off this month’s issue, we want to extend our gratitude to Martine Bouchard, who will be leaving her role as President and CEO of St. Boniface Hospital. She has inspired many and we want to wish her well with the many adventures that await. We also want to welcome Nicole Aminot who has agreed to take on the role of President and CEO and help the Board steer the hospital in this time of transition. You can read more about them both here.
Lastly, we want to welcome Dominique Philibert to our team as Director of Communications, effective October 18, 2021. Her hiring is part of our strategic plan, which includes the priority of communicating our mission and identity in order to allow the Network to flourish. You can read more about her here.
